These are just the instrument files (*.exs) for use with a huge number of samples you can download for free from
ftp://ftp.akaipro.co.jp/downloads/sound_libraries/S5000-S6000/. And indeed, there's no "volume 2". All archives below are zipped.
[Update] Note: the AKAI ftp-site nowadays seems to require a login and password (used to be anonymous ftp). That means that if you don't already have these samples you're out of luck. I'm sorry, but I can't help you, so please don't send me private mail regarding this subject.
Note 2: this same set of EXS instruments can be found at other web-locations. However, as far as I know, the collection you find below is the only one which has the horrible UPPERCASE names fixed to decent "Title Case". Furthermore the Volume 1 archive contains quite a few instruments where conversion to EXS format went wrong: samples being out of tune, etc. I fixed quite a few of those instruments, but not all of them yet (there are more than 2000 instruments in the archive). So the collection below is also probably the one with the highest "fixed" ratio.
Below you find EXS instrument files (*.exs) for use with a huge number of samples you can download for free from http://www.hollowsun.com/vintage/index.html or at http://www.hollowsun.com/donations/index.html. Direct links to the relevant sample pages are included below.
All instrument archives are zipped (and very small). The original instrument files were created on an Akai S5000, and converted by various individuals to EXS format.
The collection is split in two parts: 1) Synths and other melodic instruments and 2) Drum Machines. For those who want to download all instruments in one big archive, here they are:

Michael's conversions where done with Chicken Systems Translator, who kindly donated a copy for this purpose. They represent basic conversions with minimal tweaking, a great starting point to apply your own UI settings and fine tuning.
Sascha Frank
You will find a lot of patches labelled "Synth XYZ basic". All these patches are "raw" mappings, using no UI settings. As a result of this, they will "copy" any UI setting of a previously loaded patch to them. To listen to the patches in "raw" mode you should select "Load default EXS settings" from the options pulldown. The advantage is that you can actually apply the UI settings of your favourite EXS sounds to them, just load the "source" patch, then the "Synth XYZ basic" one and save under any appropriate name (or as a plugin setting, whatever you prefer).
Then there's some patches labelled "Synth XYZ 01". These are patches with applied UI settings (= written into the EXS file). In almost all of those "01" patches the filter is switched off, but for some of them the mod-matrix was used to do some modulations adressing the filter, so you might want to try to switch the filter on and fool around with your ModWheel.
Further, the non-basic patches won't be compatible with the EXSP or EXS versions older than 5.3. In that case it is recommended using the "basic" patches (which will load fine), apply some UI settings and do a "save as".
Akai offers free drumkits for use with their MPC100. The downloads contain the samples plus an MPC1000 instrument and can be found at http://www.akaipro.com/int/mpc1k/sounds.html and http://www.akaipro.com/int/mpc1k/arc_kotw.html.
Below you find EXS24 instruments (without the samples) utilising these free samples. The "Drum Kits" below follow the General Midi drum mapping standard as closely as possible. The "Various Percussion" instruments are mostly mapped chromatically, starting at C1.
